Diagnosis: General colouration dark greyish, with yellowish tinge; head 1.25* as wide as high; arista plumose only on dorsal surface; palpus spatulate, slightly narrowed in basal 1/4 to 1/2 reaching tip of haustellum when proboscis flexed; presternum setulose; proepisternal depression and postalar wall bare; prealar seta differentiated or vestigial; lower calypter ca 2x as long as upper calypter.
Proepisternum, presternum and mesopleuron lacking setae or setulae, except 2 strong katepisternal setae along upper edge.
Diagnosis: Species of Pyrgotomyia can be recognized from the other Old World Pyrgotini by a combination of the following: face oblique, concave without medial carina; gena with large subocular sclerite; palp short oval; lateral vertical seta lacking; presternum simple saddle-like, without finger-like lobes; mesonotum with 4-6 dorsocentral setae (including 1 or 2 presutural), 2 pairs of scutellar setae; wing narrow with dorsal surface of vein [R.sub.4 + 5] setulose over all its length, and very short posteroapical lobe of cell bcu; femora without long or thickened setae; oviscape simple, slightly curved dorsally and densely setulose at its apex but bearing no sclerotized hooks; elongate, apically barbed, arrow-like aculeus in female; posteriorly directed finger-like surstyli in male.
Thorax: Presternum whitish yellow, with 2 or 3 pairs of pale brown setulae; mesonotum entirely yellowish orange, with 1 + 4 dorsocentral setae, not arising from dark spots; proepisternum with sparse brown setulae scattered across surface; pleural part of thorax yellowish orange, with thin lateral dark brown fascia running from anterior part of postpronotum to wing base; postpronotum, notopleural area, anepisternum and meron pale orange; katepisternum with 1 strong black seta and some smaller setulae; anepisternum and anepimeron glabrous; meron bearing a few brown setulae at posterodorsal corner; scutellum and postscutellum yellowish orange; scutellum slightly elongate and pointed apically, with >20 small blackish setulae at lateral margin (Fig.
