A
middle ear implant is a more recent hearing implant, offering an alternative to conventional hearing aids.
After septoplasty, the
middle ear pressure was -21.18[+ or -]30.72 daPa in Group 1 and -24.96[+ or -]41.74 daPa in Group 2.
The culprit here is the Eustachian tube, a narrow passage between the
middle ear and the rear of the nose, near the soft palate.
Long-term follow-up is integral in all patients with inverted papilloma of the
middle ear and mastoid cavity because of the possibility of recurrence and the high rate of malignant transformation [7].
Patients for whom treatment was not effective or led to recurrence were given
middle ear tympanoplasty and TT placement, followed by dexamethasone rinsing of the tympanic cavity via the TT.
Severe hearing loss, facial nerve weakness, and vestibular dysfunction are advanced sequel of
middle ear pathology that should raise red flags for a more sinister cause.
Structures of
middle ear like chorda tympani nerve, handle of malleus, opening of Eustachian tube, Promontory, Pyramids with tendon of stapedius muscle, facial recess, sinus tympani, ponticulus subiculum and round window were examined.
Swelling, inflammation and mucus in the Eustachian taubes from an upper respiratory infection or allergy can block them, causing the accumulation of fluids in the
middle ear. A bacterial or viral infection of this fluid is usually what produces the symptoms of an ear infection.
The pre-operative CT scans were reported to assess characteristic cholesteatoma findings, location and extension of soft tissues in
middle ear, integrity of scutum, erosion of the ossicular chain, integrity of the thin bony septum of facial nerve canal, the semicircular canals and the tegmenextension of cholesteatoma outside the
middle ear, integrity of mastoid air cells, trabeculae, as well as relationship and proximity of soft tissues with the tympanic membrane were assessed.
In the presence of an intact
middle ear system, we support the notion that the degree of hearing loss is affected only by the size of the TM perforation (more hearing loss with bigger perforation size) and
middle ear volume (more hearing loss with smaller
middle ear volume).
Middle ear infections (acute otitis media or AOM) are bacterial, not viral.
Infections of the ear can be either external ear infections or
middle ear infections.
