The results of quantitative fraction analysis in these sites exhibited significantly higher content of
elastic fibers in the vertical direction ([E.sub.V]) at shoulder and wrist areas.
Caption: FIGURE 5: Histology examination showed increased collagen bundles, increased fibroblasts, reduction in
elastic fibers, and scant perivascular lymphocytic inflammation (hematoxylin-eosin stain; original magnification x4).
Histopathological (semi-quantitative) and image analysis program (quantitative) demonstrated that the amount of collagen bundles decreased and
elastic fibers increased in the MMC group (Group 2) compared to the TGF-[beta]1 group (Group 1).
Cutis laxa encompasses a heterogeneous disease group characterized clinically as loose and redundant skin and histopathologically as loss or fragmentation of
elastic fibers. Unlike anetoderma and MDE, cutis laxa often involves internal organs.
This feature is not characteristic of PPFE, because in PPFE there is a homogenous intra-alveolar fibrosis with generally preserved alveolar structure and even thickening of the alveolar structures through the process of
elastic fiber deposition.
Elastic Fiber Matrices: Biomimetic Approaches to Regeneration and Repair
The
elastic fibers or strands stick to the nonwovens and form an open cell structure.
Degenerative processes of
elastic fibers in sun-protected and sun-exposed skin: immunoelectron microscopic observation of elastin, fibrillin-1, amyloid P component, lysozyme and alpha1-antitrypsin.
In most cases, the underlying structural problem leading to ballooning-out of the thoracic aorta is loss of smooth muscle cells and degeneration of
elastic fibers. This is not a normal aging process, although age and hypertension can accelerate it.
There were few
elastic fibers arranged in few concentric layers, abundant fibroblasts and pericytes (primitive smooth muscle fibers) as depicted in Fig.3C and 3D.The lumina were small at this stage.
