structural or functional abnormality of the sphincter of Oddi that interferes with bile or pancreatic duct drainage.

biliary dyskinesia

An idiopathic disorder of bile motility linked to structural and/or functional abnormalities of Oddi’s sphincter, usually understood to mean increased sphincter pressure. It may cause recurrent abdominal pain in middle-aged women after cholecystectomy, even in absence of clinical evidence of biliary or pancreatic disease.

biliary dyskinesia

A tendency to spasm of the outlet of the BILE DUCT (sphincter of Oddi) so that the movement of bile into the duodenum is impeded.

For decades, surgical dogma has held that cholecystectomy is the treatment of choice for biliary dyskinesia, a condition characterized by right upper quadrant pain, the absence of cholelithiasis, and a gallbladder ejection fraction less than 35%-40%.
A hepatobiliary scan revealed that the gallbladder had an abnormal ejection fraction of 33%, suggestive of biliary dyskinesia. Labs were all within normal limits with the exception of low potassium of 2.9.
