Langhans cells of human arterial intima: Uniform by stellate appearance but different by nature," Tissue & Cell, vol.
Caption: Figure 2: Histopathological picture showing epithelioid cells,
Langhans cells, and foci of caseous necrosis.
HPE showed Langhans cells and AFB staining positive for two.
HPE of the tissue showed positive for Langhans cells with AFB +ve.
In mid-borderline leprosy, grenz zone in 75%, AFB in 50% cases by ZN stain and 75% cases by modified Fite stain, macrophage predominance of infiltrate in 75% cases, perivascular and periappendiceal infiltrate in 50%, immature epithelioid granuloma and obliteration of nerve by granuloma in 33.33% of cases, and lymphocyte predominance of infiltrate, macrophage granuloma, and presence of
Langhans cells each in 25% of cases were seen.
Macrophages in granulomas may fuse to form multinucleated giant cells,
Langhans cells. Local secretion of the cytokine TNF is required for optimal granuloma structure.
The numerous epithelioid granulomas contained
Langhans cells and foreign body giant cells, while the necrotizing lesions contained neutrophilic and eosinophilic infiltrates.
