The functional part of a mass spectrometer, in which ions—formed at the source—are differentiated based on their mass-to-charge ratios and detected by the detector.

analyser 

1. Polarizing device used to determine the plane of vibration of a beam of polarized light. Examples: Nicol prism, polaroid sheet, tourmaline crystal.
2. In a polariscope, the second of the two polarizing elements, the first being the polarizer. See polarized light.
