Heart-and-lung transplantation Thoracic surgery The surgical removal of the heart and lung block in a Pt in whom both are failing; HLT is performed at specialized centers Outcome Adequate ventilation despite loss of innervation and ↑ tidal volume Indications Primary lung disease–chronic disturbance in gas exchange and alveolar mechanics and 2º ↑ in pulmonary vascular resistance Pulmonary vascular disease–1º high-resistance circulatory disorder–HLT is beneficial in absence of tracheobronchial and alveolar defects.
