An alkaloid, C₂₁H₂₆N₂O₃, that is derived from the bark of a tree, Pausinystalia johimbe, and is an alpha-blocker drug used in the form of its hydrochloride as a mydriatic, a treatment for erectile dysfunction, and formerly as an aphrodisiac.

Pharmacognosy
An indolamine alkaloid obtained from the bark of the West African yohimbe tree (Pausinystalia yohimbe) and others (e.g., Rauwolfia serpentina). Yohimbine is used for psychogenic and organic erectile dysfunction, increasing the inflow to and/or decreasing the outflow of blood from the penis by blocking the pre- and post-synaptic alpha-2 adrenoceptors. It has been studied for treating orthostatic hypotension and ischaemia due to autonomonic dysfunction in diabetes and narcotic overdose.

Toxicity
Tachcardia, hypertension, insomnia, nausea, palpitations, tremors, vomiting.
