thrombophilia

A tendency to blood clotting within the blood vessels (a hypercoagulable state). The condition, which may be of genetic origin results from any defect or deficiency of a natural anticoagulant such as activated protein C, antithrombin or protein S. Resistance to activated protein C is an important cause. Thrombophilia increases the probability of heart attacks, strokes and, in pregnant women, miscarriage.
