FGG

A gene on chromosome 4q28 that encodes the gamma component of fibrinogen, a circulation glycoprotein which is comprised of three pairs of nonidentical polypeptide chains. After vascular injury, fibrinogen is cleaved by thrombin to form fibrin, which is the most abundant component of blood clots. Various cleavage products of fibrinogen and fibrin regulate cell adhesion and spreading, have vasoconstrictor and chemotactic activities, and are mitogenic for various cell types.

Molecular pathology
Defects in FGG are linked to dysfibrinogenaemia, hypofibrinogenaemia and thrombophilia.
