BioTime is a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on developing and commercializing novel therapies developed from what the company believes to be the world's premier collection of
pluripotent cell assets.
iPS cell technology can reportedly create
pluripotent stem cells from the normal adult cells of a patient.
"The teratoma assay requires animal testing and a time span of six to eight weeks before scientists can prove that they have a
pluripotent stem cell line.
"Much of the ethical controversy over stem cells derives from the fact that, until now, the only way to obtain human
pluripotent stem cell lines has been to derive them from living human embryos by a process that necessarily destroys embryos," Leon Kass, PhD, the chair of the council, said in releasing the report.
"This is the first time that an adult
pluripotent stem cell has been isolated prospectively," said Alejandro Sanchez Alvarado, senior author of the study.
The focus of the project will be to genetically engineer the company's CyT49
pluripotent stem cell line.
These induced
pluripotent stem (iPS) cells can develop into most other cell types and are a source of great hope for use in regenerative medicine and the development of new drugs to prevent and treat various illnesses.
The therapeutic potential of
pluripotent stem-cells is remarkably broad.
Starting with
pluripotent stem cells that are not muscle cells, but can become all existing cells in our body, allows growth of an unlimited number of myogenic progenitor cells.
Although the cells made from the
pluripotent stem cells are a mix of true blood stem cells and other cells known as blood progenitor cells, they proved capable of generating multiple types of human blood cells when put into mice.
London, Dec 13 (ANI): For the first time ever, Cincinnati researchers have created functioning human intestinal tissue in the laboratory from
pluripotent stem cells.
While there are several promising types of stem cells under investigation for wound healing, in the March issue of Stem Cell Research and Therapy, a team of researchers zeroed in on one up-and-coming option: induced
pluripotent stem cells.
