In conclusion, physicians should be aware that nonsuppurative parotitis may be a manifestation of KD.
(10) Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics have recommended shortening the isolation period from 9 days to 5 days after the onset of parotitis. (11) This was based on limited historical studies performed prior to the availability of mumps vaccination, and one small 2008 study in a highly vaccinated population12 in which virus detection, hence the potential for transmission, was observed to be highest prior to the onset of parotitis and within the subsequent 5 days.
Within 24 hours of the onset of 600 mg/[m.sub.2]/day methylprednisolone treatment, the parotitis and swelling dactylitis resolved dramatically (Figure 2).
During July 15-23, an additional 25 cases of parotitis were seen.
Patient C, a female aged 15 years and a student of patient B at facility A, reported parotitis onset on November 25 and attendance 19 days earlier at event 1.
Out of these 40 cases, which underwent surgical excision followed by histologic evaluation, 16 cases were of pleomorphic adenoma, 6 cases of chronic sialadenitis, 2 cases of Warthin's tumour, 3 cases of parotitis, 4 cases of mucoepidermoid carcinoma, 4 cases of acinic cell carcinoma, 5 cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma were reported.
In our case, despite the fact that our patient was not immunocompromised, the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus is significant, as it is a well-known risk factor for developing parotitis [3].
After detail search author found only 44 cases of neonatal suppurative parotitis in the literature in the last 44 (1970- 2013) years.1-4 Most of the cases were male(77%) with involvement of unilateral parotid gland (77%).
White blood cell count, polymorphonuclear leucocytes and CRP were not suggestive of acute suppurative parotitis. Repeated serum mumps IgM was negative at the 14th day.
([dagger]) One case-patient was hospitalized for parotitis to rule out infection with mumps and was discharged in stable condition after 1 day.
