paraaortic bodies

(par'ă-ā-ōr'tik bod'ēz) Small masses of chromaffin tissue found near the sympathetic ganglia along the abdominal aorta; they are more prominent during fetal life. The chromaffin cells secrete norepinephrine; chemoreceptive endings monitor levels of blood gases.
