mode
[mōd] in statistics, the most frequently occurring value or item in a distribution.
2. the manner of interaction between a ventilator and the person being ventilated, usually defined in terms of what the stimulus is that starts the ventilation.
assist-control mode a mode of
positive pressure ventilation in which the ventilator is in
assist mode unless the patient's respiration rate falls below a certain amount, in which case the ventilator switches to a
control mode. When the strength or rate of respiration increases again, the ventilator goes back into assist mode.
asynchronous mode a
pacing mode in which there is regular stimulation without regard to sensed cardiac signals.
inhibited mode a
pacing mode in which a sensed event prevents or stops a pacing stimulus and starts a timing cycle.
pressure control mode a mode of
positive pressure ventilation in which each breath is augmented by air at a fixed rate and amount of pressure, with tidal volume not being fixed. See also under
ventilation.
triggered mode a
pacing mode in which the stimulus is emitted in response to a sensed event.
