As described previously, (19) 167
meta-analysis articles were identified from 12 major diagnostic pathology journals and 4 major medicine journals through a literature search in PubMed.
To address the problem of heterogeneity within the analyzed
meta-analysis, we extracted information when available.
Omega-3 essential fatty acids therapy for dry eye syndrome: a
meta-analysis of randomized controlled studies.
Tobler's first
meta-analysis (1986), focusing on the content of drug prevention programs, was based on 98 studies published between 1972 and 1984 encompassing 143 program strategies (modalities).
"Network
meta-analysis (NMA) can be defined as the simultaneous comparison of multiple competing treatment modalities within the framework of a single statistical model." [1] It is a generalization of pairwise
meta-analysis that permits multiple comparisons (three or more treatment groups) in a single analysis.
Goldsmith and his collaborators found that only the cytokine, IL-6, was significantly elevated, compared with healthy controls, for all three illnesses included in the
meta-analysis (P < .01 for all).
Researchers concluded this
meta-analysis suggests garlic supplementation is superior to placebo in reducing BP in hypertensive patients, especially in those with high SBP.
The summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) curve was used to represent the performance of a diagnostic test,[sup.23] based on data from a
meta-analysis. The SROC curve included multiple points, and the cut-off points were determined by the maximal value points, which are the value summations of the sensitivity and specificity.[sup.24] The area under the curve (AUC) and an index Q were discussed as potentially useful summaries of the curve.
The coding sheets could hold up to 253 items from each included
meta-analysis. Both authors coded all studies independent of each other.

Glass (1976) defines
meta-analysis as "the statistical analysis of a large collection of analysis results from individual studies for the purpose of integrating the findings.
