defunctioning colostomy

defunctioning colostomy

The surgical exteriorisation of the colon after segmental resection and before re-anastomosis, as a way of reducing inflammation and improving outcomes. Meta-analysis of defunctioning colostomy confirms its utility in reducing anastomotic leaks and need for reoperation, and is recommended after low anterior resection for rectal cancer.
