"Some people think deaf people should be able to lip read, but
lip reading is very difficult.
Moallem is of the opinion that such handheld devices may make it easier for deaf people to follow conversations than with
lip reading alone, which requires a great deal of concentration.
Among suggested accommodations are use of a microphone and facilitating the student's
lip reading. Other topics briefly covered are detecting a hearing impairment and difficulties for the hearing impaired such as poor communication with peers.
Lip reading courses for people with impaired hearing are to be launched in Dudley.
For example, the costs of sending a blind child to school primarily to learn braille or sending a deaf child to school primarily to learn
lip reading are deductible.
Although those classified as profoundly deaf cannot aurally comprehend speech even with the most powerful hearing aids, educators teach
lip reading and students use hearing devices to amplify any residual hearing.
The college already runs very popular classes in sign language, as well as
lip reading classes for people who are losing their hearing.
