(kē'tōs),
A carbohydrate containing the characteristic carbonyl group of the ketones, that is, a polyhydroxyketone (for example, fructose, ribulose, sedoheptulose); the majority of the naturally occurring ketoses have the carbonyl group on the second carbon.
