(kē'tōl grūp), Carbons 1 and 2 of a 2-ketose (HOCH2CO-); trans-ketolation from d-xylose 5-phosphate to C-1 of aldoses is important in various metabolic pathways involving carbohydrates (for example, photosynthesis, Dickens shunt); the two-carbon unit is transferred as α,β-dihydroxyethylthiamin pyrophosphate.
