ProANP 1-30 is the long-acting natriuretic peptide, proANP 31-67 has vasodilation properties, and proANP 79-98 or
kaliuretic peptide, is involved in potassium excretion.
When aldosterone or other
kaliuretic factors fail to maintain potassium homeostasis, extracellular [[K.sup.+]] may rise until it reaches a level sufficient to produce a sustained increase in renal potassium excretion.
The aim of this study was to assess diuretic, natriuretic and
kaliuretic activities of these medicinal plants.
Guanylin and uroguanylin were first tested in the isolated rat kidney and both presented consistent results as natriuretic and kaliuretic hormones, qualitatively similar to STa (4,7).
Natriuretic and kaliuretic activities of guanylin and uroguanylin in the isolated perfused rat kidney.
The leaves of the plant have been used as an oral contraceptive and sweetener (Mazzei-Planas & Kuc, 1968), a hypoglycemic agent (Curi et al, 1986; Gregersen et al, 2004), a diuretic, natriuretic and
kaliuretic (Melis 1992, 1995; Kinghorn & Soejarto, 1985), and a hypotensive agent (Soejarto et al, 1982; Kinghorn & Soejarto, 1985; Melis, 1992; Haebisch, 1992; Hsu et al, 2002).
In the isolated perfused rat kidney, both peptides elicit strong natriuretic and kaliuretic responses (Fonteles et al., 1998).
Renal metabolism of this peptide may also explain why uroguanylin is more potent as natriuretic and kaliuretic than guanylin in the isolated perfused rat kidney (Fonteles et al., 1998).
and kaliuretic at doses of 350 and 500 mg/kg body wt.
dose of corn silk used in Protocol 1, the diuretic and kaliuretic dose, on glomerular and tubular function parameters.
These peptides have been named the long-acting natriuretic peptide (i.e., N-terminal [proANP.sub.1-30]); the vessel dilator peptide (i.e., [proANP.sub.31-67]); and the
kaliuretic peptide (i.e., [proANP.sub.79-98]).
Three peptides from the ANF prohormone NHZterminus are natriuretic and/or
kaliuretic. Am J Physiol 1990;258:11401-8.
