Host factors that may confer higher risk for the development of cancer include mutation of the E-cadherin gene (as in the diffuse type), (11) genetic associations with certain ABO blood groups, male gender, and familial cancer syndromes such as
hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC), familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, and hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC), but consideration of these entities is beyond the scope of this discussion.
