geriatric medicine

The medicine of old age. The branch of medicine concerned with the practical application of the science of GERONTOLOGY to the improvement of the quality of life of elderly people. Modern geriatrics is a growing and positive discipline much concerned with the abolition of conventional stereotypes. The emphasis is on the encouragement of maximal activity and achievement, regardless of age, and the avoidance, and when necessary, management, of conditions such as ATHEROSCLEROSIS, STROKE, heart disease, defects of vision and hearing, OSTEOPOROSIS, DIABETES, ARTHRITIS, CANCER and DEMENTIA.
