MRCGP

Member, Royal College of General Practitioners. Under the old system of qualification, a postgraduate qualification conferred on a medical doctor in the UK after at least 4 years of postgraduate training (under the old system), 1 year as a pre-registration house officer (PRHO), two years as a senior house officer (SHO), a year on a general practice vocational training scheme and passing the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) membership examination.

Under the Modernising Medical Careers programme, 2005, GP training entails 2 Foundation Years (FY1 and FY2) and a 3-year "run-through" GP Specialty Training Program, of which 18 months is spent as a Specialty Registrar, in which time the trainee completes an array of posts (of 3+ months each) in hospital specialties—e.g., obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, geriatric medicine, A&E or psychiatry—and 18 months as a Specialty Registrar in General Practice.

Under both systems, the trainee is considered qualified once he or she has passed the RCGP closure examination.
