layer between submucosa and adventitia of bronchi that includes cartilages enclosed in perichondrium continuous between cartilages with a dense, fibrous membrane that includes smooth muscle and elastic fibers; this layer provides rigidity to the wall while allowing active reduction and passive increase in diameter of the bronchus.
