external auditory canal: surgical treatment and long-term outcomes.

Clinical findings include a mass in the
external auditory canal and occasional otitis media.
Earwax also contributes to
external auditory canal problems.
Osteomas of the temporal bone are rare tumors that are mostly observed in the
external auditory canal, arising from the tympanic bone.

Mastoidectomy preserving the bony
external auditory canal and tympanoplasty are referred to as closed technique or combined approach tympanoplasty that was first proposed by Sheehy and Janson,1,2 aiming to improve the classical mastoidectomy.
Keratosis Obturans (KO) is the accumulation of desquamated keratin appearing as large plug in the
external auditory canal. It probably results from faulty migration of squamous epithelial cells which arise from the outer surface of tympanic membrane and from the skin of the adjacent part of bony
external auditory canal, which becomes mixed with ear wax to form a thick plug.
Of the 1402 cases from Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery of Beijing Friendship Hospital, temporary facial nerve injury was noted in 4 (0.28%) cases, and injury to the posterior wall of the
external auditory canal was reported in 14 (0.99%) cases.
Human wax is a mixture of desquamated keratinocytes secreted in outer third of the wall of
external auditory canal, and sebaceous gland secretions, along with apocrine sweat glands.
