ergocalciferol

[er″go-kal-sif´er-ol]

vitamin D₂; a sterol occurring naturally in fungi and some fish oils or synthesized from ergosterol, and similar to cholecalciferol in activity and metabolism; it is administered orally or added to food (e.g., milk) as a dietary source of vitamin D. It is also used in treatment of hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, rickets, and osteodystrophy associated with various medical conditions including chronic renal failure and hypoparathyroidism, administered orally, intramuscularly, or intravenously.

ergocalciferol

Vitamin D₂. This is produced in the body by the action of ultraviolet light on ergosterol. Vitamin D is necessary for the normal mineralization of bone. Deficiency leads to RICKETS in growing children and bone softening (OSTEOMALACIA) in adults. The drug is on the WHO official list.
