the conic area of origin of the axon from the nerve cell body; it contains parallel arrays of microtubules and is devoid of Nissl substance.

A conical protuberance that surrounds the axon at its point of departure from the neuronal body, at which point Nissl substance is minimal and accompanied by specialised plasmalemma.
