The broad-spectrum
antiviral protein ZAP restricts human retrotransposition.
In the present study, intravaginal administration of increasing concentrations of PAP, a highly stable, potent and broad-spectrum
antiviral protein, given to female [B.sub.6][C.sub.3][F.sub.1] mice via a gel formulation for 13 weeks, caused no treatment-related adverse effects on survival, mean body weight gain, mean body weight, absolute or relative organ weights or histopathology.
Washington, May 14 (ANI): Scientists have used computational methods to design new
antiviral proteins not found in nature, but capable of targeting specific surfaces of flu virus molecules.
They also noted that similar interaction sites are found on the same surface in other members of this
antiviral protein family.
APOBEC3B is part of a family of
antiviral proteins that Harris has studied for more than a decade.
The drug candidate also induced a broad immune response with dose-dependent increases in serum concentrations of
antiviral proteins and activation of cellular immune responses.
Among the strategies already described is blockage of certain steps in the synthesis of IFN-[alpha]/[beta], inactivation of secreted IFN molecules, interference with signaling and/or blockage of the activity of effector
antiviral proteins through their sequestration, production of viral homologous proteins, or competition.

"The goal of the study was to determine if meditation might alter the activity of inflammatory and
antiviral proteins that shape immune cell gene expression," said Lavretsky.
The emergence of drug-resistant viral strains in individuals who require chronic therapy for effective clinical management of their infection, adverse side-effects, and the suboptimal pharmacokinetics of the drugs currently available encourage the study of naturally occurring
antiviral proteins and synthetic derivatives with potential promise for clinical use.
Not all intracellular immunization depends on the production of
antiviral proteins. Many researchers in the field have turned to ribonucleic acid (RNA).
