Angioleiomyoma of the internal auditory canal: clinical and radiographic features," Otology and Neurotology, vol.
Histologically, a solid or capillary type of
angioleiomyoma consists of smooth muscle bundles, which by their close interlocking structure give the vascular channels a slit-like shape.
Angioleiomyoma have been described subcutaneously in the extremities and in other sites including the head and neck, diaphragm, (2) and also within bone.
The smooth muscle did not form well-defined vascular walls; this characteristic identified the lesion as an
angioleiomyoma of the cavernous type.
Karyotype evolution in a case of uterine
angioleiomyoma. Cancer Genet Cytogenet.
Hachisuga et al reviewed 562 cases of
angioleiomyoma clinicopathologically.
Angioleiomyoma commonly presents as a well-circumscribed mass arising from the uterine corpus.
These tumors appear to represent "true HPCs." (9) They show a considerable morphologic overlap with related tumors such as infantile myofibromatosis, solitary adult myofibroma, glomangiopericytoma, glomangiomyoma, and some vascular leiomyomas (
angioleiomyomas).
Recently, CD1a and cathepsin K were found to be positive in both spindle-shaped and epithelioid LAM cells, and they may provide useful new markers for the diagnosis of pulmonary LAM and renal
angioleiomyoma. (7,18)
Angioleiomyomas (ALMAs) emerge from the smooth muscle cells that form the tunica media of vascular structures.
Histologically, three types of leiomyomas are present: epithelioid leiomyoma, solid -form leiomyoma, and vascular leiomyoma (angiomyomas or
angioleiomyomas) (5, 6).
