acetone body

A KETONE body. One of the three compounds, acetoacetic acid, 3-hydroxybutanoic acid and acetone, produced when, in the absence of adequate available glucose, fatty acids are used for fuel. Acetone bodies are produced in large quantity in severe untreated DIABETES and are the cause of ACIDOSIS and dangerous diabetic COMA.
