The School Food Trust is a new
non-departmental public body established by the Department for Education and Skills with pounds 15m of funding.
Primary legislation is needed to alter the Tote's status as a
non-departmental public body. The legislation will join the list of pending bills but is unlikely to come before the next general election, due in 2002.
Subject to the approval of Parliament, the Historic Royal Palaces Agency will be established as a
non-departmental public body on April 1.
The Tote's status as a
non-departmental public body has served it well in the past but has become increasingly anomalous as it has become more of a commercial operation.
