Prognostic considerations for MCTs include grade, clinical stage, location, systemic symptoms, status of surgical margins, and
mitotic index. Mast cell tumors that are completely removed and are Low-Grade, Grade I, or Grade II with a low
mitotic index and free of metastasis have an excellent prognosis, with most cases being considered cured.
Similar to the second biopsy, the
mitotic index was 16 per 10 x400 fields (2.37 [mm.sup.2]), and numbers of karyomegalic and multinucleated cells were increased compared to the initial mass.
Tumors displaying malignant behaviors are assessed by tumor size and the
mitotic index per 50 high power feld (HPF).
The
mitotic index (MI) were calculated as the number of dividing cells as a fraction of the total number of cells, and the frequency of chromosome (CA) and nuclear alterations (NA), expressed as the percentage of number of alterations divided by the total number of cells (Aragao et al., 2015).

Mitotic index (MI) and cell death index (CDI) were also evaluated.
Previous studies have suggested that tumor size is the only important independent prognostic factor in multivariate analysis for DFS after R0 resection of gastric GISTs [18], while others argue that the
mitotic index was an independent factor in multivariate analysis [19,20].
Contrarily, the
mitotic index (%MI) showed a general trend for a decrease with the increase of Cr(VI), with significant differences for the higher Cr(VI) concentrations.
Mitotic index measured in only 22 patients was mainly low (64%).
The mean
mitotic index was scored and repeated for all the replicates.
11 of 13 cases had a
mitotic index of [less than or equal to] 1 mitosis/50 HPF, and all cases had a mitotic count [less than or equal to] 4 mitoses/50 HPF.
