zoo-blotting

a HYBRIDIZATION technique to determine whether a DNA fragment contains a GENE. The technique is based on the fact that homologous genes in related organisms are likely to have similar DNA sequences, whilst non-coding DNA sequences between genes usually do not. Hence if a positive hybridization signal is generated when a DNA fragment is hybridized to DNA preparations from related species, that fragment is likely to contain a gene.
