xiphisternum

The flat, leaf-like process hanging down from the lower end of the breastbone (sternum). The xiphisternum is cartilaginous in childhood, partly bony (ossified) in adult life and wholly ossified and fused to the sternum in old age. Also known as the xiphoid process.
