waiting-time guarantee An NHS term for the local or national guarantees—whichever time is shorter—that a patient will wait no more than a stated time from:
(1) the hospital's receipt of referral to the first outpatient appointment for a particular type of case (e.g., hip replacement), and/or
(2) the time from the decision to admit to a given admission date.
