Dactylitis can occur in seronegative arthropathies, such as psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis, in sickle-cell disease as result of a vasoocclusive crisis with bone infarcts, and in infectious conditions including tuberculosis and leprosy (6).
In the present study, iron deficiency anaemia was found to be more common in sickle cell anaemia patients as compared to sickle cell trait and normal controls and this could be due to low dietary intake during vasoocclusive crisis, infections and malabsorption.
