vascular endothelium

the endothelium that lines the blood vessels.

vascular endothelium

The simple squamous epithelial tissue lining the blood vessels. It is a semipermeable barrier between the blood and the vascular smooth muscle, produces vasodilator chemicals, and may inhibit vasoconstrictor substances. Damage to the endothelium leads to increased production of prostaglandins and stimulates blood clotting.

tunica intima

single layer of specialized cells on a basement membrane forming the lining membrane of the entire vascular system (including heart and lymphatics); acts as interface between blood (within vascular system) and extravascular tissues; non-thrombogenic surface that does not normally react with plasma clotting factors and platelets (i.e. clots only form on it in presence of vascular/haematological pathology); regulates levels of circulating vasoactive chemicals (e.g. bradykinin, serotonin [5-HT], angiotensin); controls tissue perfusion (by releasing nitric oxide, prostacyclin and endothelin) by affecting vasomotor tone and platelet function

At the site of inflammation, proinflammatory cytokines lead to increased expression of ICAM-1 on vascular endothelium and activation of leukocyte integrins, which results in the adhesion of leukocytes to endothelial cells and migration to the site of inflammation.
Next, experiments were carried out in the absence of vascular endothelium, determining the mechanism involved in endothelium-independent vasorelaxation induced by plant extract.
In the last 40 years, research on the vascular endothelium has been very productive and its results have greatly contributed to our understanding of the normal functioning of the vasculature as well as providing important clues for unraveling the mystery of cardiovascular disease, its origin, development, complications and its prevention or treatment.
Only moderate suitably selected exercises enhance the antioxidant barrier and protect the vascular endothelium from damage, while maintaining its proper functioning [26].
Endothelium was once thought to be simply a passive lining for blood vessels, it is now recognized that the vascular endothelium is a key determinant of vascular health.
1] The association between ED and vascular disease lies with the vascular endothelium, which has an essential role in the regulation of circulatory function.
The function of the vascular endothelium plays a central role in the health and disease of the cardiovascular system.
The antigen is expressed by both vascular endothelial cells and platelets and is often used as a phenotypic marker to identify the vascular endothelium [13].

The ingredients of Metanx[R] have been shown to counteract oxidative and nitrosative stress in vascular endothelium and peripheral nerve tissue, and to alleviate paresthesias and dyesthesias in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN).
For example, it relaxes the vascular endothelium and smooth muscle cells, which is important to maintaining clean arteries as one ages, explained first author Zhi-Sheng Jiang, of the University of South China, Hunan.
