van Leeuwenhoek, Anton

(1632–1723) a Dutch merchant and amateur scientist, who in 1673 was probably the first person to observe live MICROORGANISMS by means of magnifying lenses. He wrote letters to the Royal Society in London, describing the ‘animalcules’ that he saw.
