Although the field of translational research
still feels relatively new, the groundwork for this field was laid nearly 50 years ago.
The grant will allow Rutgers and its partners to train and cultivate the translational science workforce; engage patients and communities in every phase of the translational process; promote the integration of special and underserved populations in translational research
across the human lifespan; innovate processes to increase the quality and efficiency of translational research
, particularly of multisite trials; and advance the use of big data information systems.
One of these partnerships is the Translational Research
Institute for Space Health (TRISH).

According to Woolf (12), "Translational research
means different things to different people, but it seems important to almost everyone", although these differences may engender some confusion.

Previously, Dr Houston has worked at Bristol-Myers Squibb in multiple positions, including head of immuno-oncology, immuno-science, fibrosis, cardiovascular, virology, neuroscience and genetically defined diseases; head of translational research
teams in oncology, immuno-oncology and immunology; head of technology groups; chair of the BMS target portfolio committee; site head and chair of the BMS Wallingford, Connecticut, site; as well as chair of the R&D site evolution steering committee.
Therefore, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) created the "Roadmap for Medical Research" to address new pathways for scientific discovery for research teams of the future and suggestions to re-engineer clinical research highlighting the importance of public-private partnerships and translational research
aims to "translate" findings from basic and fundamental research into medical practice in order to improve health outcomes for patients and populations.
As announced in August 2015, both universities have each pledged $250,000 annually for a three-year combined effort of $1.5 million to support innovative clinical projects and/or translational research
that will ultimately help faculty members at both schools better serve West Virginians and attract future external funding.
