a blood test used to detect levels of TBG, the major thyroid hormone protein carrier. Elevated TBGs may indicate porphyria or infectious hepatitis, among other conditions, while decreased TBGs may signify various causes of hypoproteinemia (nephrotic syndrome, GI malabsorption, malnutrition).
