Healthcare services of a highly specialised nature, or for rare conditions, which are typically provided as inpatients in a tertiary care centre (centre of excellence). Tertiary care referrals are usually made by secondary care providers (in the UK, consultants; not GPs) working in secondary care centres (e.g., in district general hospitals—DGHs).
