terminal illness syndromeA condition which includes one or more of the following: a causative illness with a progressive evolution–eg, AIDS or CA, survival defined in terms of days or wks, Karnovsky score of < 40%, single or multiorgan failure, failure of conventional or proven treatment measures, absence of other potential proven or experimental therapy, irreversible progressive complications. See Karnovsky scale.
