tannic acid ointment

tannic acid ointment

An obsolete pharmaceutical preparation formerly used to treat burns, as it forms a film of protective protein tannate on open or denuded surfaces. Tannic acid ointment has been abandoned for treating burns or large open wounds as it creates a favourable environment for the growth of anaerobic bacteria, and because massive absorption of tannic acid may cause liver damage.
