While classical synthetic medium
formulations support viability of a wide range of cell types, it is important to realize that medium still provides an artificial environment compared to physiologic conditions.
Test on Synthetic Medium
. In test performed on synthetic liquid medium (YES 5%), the OTA containment ability of five OTA- strains against five OTA+ strains was assessed (Figure 1).
Potassium nitrate, ammonium chloride, sodium nitrate, urea, yeast extract, tryptone, beefextract, and peptone were supplemented in synthetic medium
with 10 g/L (w/v) concentration.
The medium could be of a biological origin such as blood serum or tissue extract, synthetic medium
or a mixture of the two.

The inoculum preparation involved the following steps: (i) inoculation of 100.0 mL of synthetic medium
(glucose, 10.0 g [L.sup.-1]; N[H.sub.4]N[O.sub.3], 2.0 g [L.sup.-1]; [K.sub.2]HP[O.sub.4], 1.0 g [L.sup.-1]; Na[H.sub.2]P[O.sub.4] x [H.sub.2]O, 0.4 g [L.sup.-1]; MgS[O.sub.4] x 7[H.sub.2]O, 0.5 g [L.sup.-1]; yeast extract, 2.0 g [L.sup.-1]; pH 6.5) with 25 mycelium discs (0 0.5 cm) from 7-day old MA culture; (ii) incubation at room temperature (22 [+ or -] 2[degrees]C), on a rotary shaker (100 rpm), for 7 days; (iii) washing of the resultant biomass (3 times) with sterile distilled water (d[H.sub.2]O); and (iv) biomass homogenization with 100.0 mL of sterile d[H.sub.2]O in a laboratory blender.
In the case of synthetic medium
the maximum antibiotic activity was achieved at initial pH 8 (Figure 6), at temperature 34-37[degrees]C (Figure 7), 0% NaCl (w/v) (Figure 8), and 48 h incubation time (Figure 9).
