(1) An obsolete term formerly used for any fold or redundancy of the synovial membrane—e.g., pigmented villonodular synovitis. 
(2) Synovial villus; villus synovialis [NH3/NA6].

Histologically, PVNS reveals a hypertrophic synovial process that is characterized by villous, nodular, or villonodular proliferation and hemosiderin pigmentation.
