Synchronized electrical shocks should be used to treat a patient with a tachycardic heart rhythm when that arrhythmia is poorly tolerated, but not immediately life threatening. Fatal arrhythmias, such as ventricular fibrillation or pulseless ventricular tachycardia should be treated with immediate, unsynchronized defibrillation.
