sweatingsecretion from the sweat glands in the skin: a major factor in the control of body temperature. Sweating is stimulated by the sympathetic nervous system and that in turn by the hypothalamus, in response to a rise in blood temperature. Corrective heat loss by evaporation of sweat is effective except in excessively humid conditions. Both salt (typically about 2.6 g.L-1) and water are lost in the sweat, but at a moderate sweating rate water loss is proportionately greater because sodium is reabsorbed in passage through the sweat ducts. Sweat loss can be as much as 4 litres per hour in heavy exercise in the heat, and more sodium per litre escapes reabsorption at higher flow rates: hence the need to replace both water and salt.
