surfactants

Substances that reduces SURFACE TENSION and promotes wetting of surfaces. The lungs contain a surfactant to prevent collapse of the alveoli. Pulmonary surfactant is a complex mixture of proteins and lipids, and this may be deficient in premature babies leading to the RESPIRATORY DISTRESS SYNDROME (hyaline membrane disease). Surfactants can also be used to interfere with the motility of spermatozoa and so act as supplementary contraceptives with a spermicidal action. Examples of surfactant drugs are poractant (Curosurf), non-oxynol-9 (Duragel, Gynol II, Ortho-Creme) and beractant (Survanta).
