Patient discussion about suring

Q. I think my son has flat foot, how to tell for sure? I didn't notice it before, he is 3 years old now and all shoes hurt him. Does it mean he has flat foot? what else can it be?

A. Pes planus (flat foot) is not a rare condition in toddlers, and may resolves spontaneously as the child grows. It is diagnosed clinically, i.e. by a doctor such as pediatrician or pediatric orthopedic surgeon, and radiographs are not universally indicated

Q. I have a new baby. How can I make sure he doesn't suffer from ADHD? Neither me or my husband have ADHD, but my sister does, and while she manages it now as a grownup, it was very difficult on her as a kid. In case I somehow have it in my genes, how can I make sure my baby doesn't develop it (if it is hereditary)?

A. There's no specific intervention for the prevention of ADHD, at least not scientifically proved one, presumably since ADD/ADHD result from complex interaction between genetics and environmental factors.

However, based on factors reported to increase the risk of ADD/ADHD, it seems wise to create a comfortable, safe and loving environment for the child to grow in. This is a very general advice - if you have any specific concern, you may want to discuss it with your child's doctor (e.g. pediatrician).

Q. my mom is going to start chemo next week will she lose all her hair for sure?

A. No. The reported chances of losing hair due to chemotherapy range between 10 and 100 percents - it depends on the type, dose, frequency and administration route of the chemotherapy given to the patient. The speed of losing the hair also varies: it can happen very quickly (as after bone marrow transplantation) or over several weeks.
