supine hypotension syndrome

A drop in blood pressure that occurs when a person, esp. a pregnant woman in the last trimester, lies on her back.

Etiology

Compression of the vena cava or the abdominal aorta by the developing fetus results in decreased return of blood to the heart.

Patient care

Most pregnant women regain a normal blood pressure if they shift to their left side.
